The Corridor

Opening Doors to a Brighter Future

Jefferson Community + Technical College is the largest public community college in Kentucky with a mission to transform lives and communities through educational excellence in an inclusive environment that opens doors for all students. Although JC+TC provides strong academic learning, the campus and surrounding neighborhood do not fully reflect the dynamic cultures or various lifestyles of Jefferson students.

The Jefferson First Street Corridor placemaking initiative seeks to use design as a tool to further activate campus spaces, inspire creativity and foster lasting community connections and feelings of belonging. In conjunction with the future implementation of the new Master Plan, this initiative will generate excitement and provide Jefferson an opportunity to lead in testing + piloting innovation not only for the college, but for all of Louisville.

Hester Street (HST) is an urban planning, design and development nonprofit working to ensure neighborhoods are shaped by the people who live in them. We pair our skills and expertise as architects, planners, developers and designers with a deep understanding that the most successful plans and development projects are driven by innovative and meaningful community engagement. Our goal is vibrant, resilient, equitable and just neighborhoods and cities.

Kale & Flax creates and changes culture through meaningful design, empathy, data and grassroots strategy — a truly human-centered approach. We are an unrelenting group of people working wherever we can make the most impact. As a human-centered design company, our philosophy is rooted in a global mindset of “improving the world around us,” starting often times with right at home.

Together, our team + The Jefferson Board, has approached this initiative having collaboration with the Jefferson community at its heart. We believe that equitable and impactful placemaking can only be achieved when residents + stakeholders are decision-makers in design, planning, and construction processes. Each intervention within our initiative works to strengthen the connection between people — students, faculty/staff, community-based partners, local businesses, residents, homeless populations and the City — and the places they share.
